With April 27th being Arbor Day, it is important to think about the small changes that we all can make in order to conserve Earth's natural resources. A great way to conserve energy is to turn the lights off when leaving a room. This may seem like a small change, but sometimes you don't return to the room for hours on end, which means there would be no need for the lights to be kept on. Another way to conserver energy is to turn your computer off instead of letting it go into stand-by mode. Finally, it is very important to conserve water. Be sure to only run your dishwasher and clothes washer when they are completely full. With the economy going the way it currently is, everybody seems to be taking one step further to ensure they are getting the most for their buck. Whether it be car pooling to work, making sure the lights are turned off once leaving a room, turning your thermostat down a few degrees while heating your home during the winter, or simply clipping more coupons for groceries out of the Sunday newspaper, we are all on the look out to save. Like always though, there are many simple changes that one can make to their home's Indoor Air Quality that can greatly lower the energy costs of their home. What Exactly is a Heat Pump?

While most homes function with both a furnace and an air conditioner, a heat pump can function as both. The main difference between using a system including a furnace and an air conditioner and using a heat pump is that furnaces and air conditioners create energy through fuel consumption, while Heat Pumps don't create energy, they simply transfer it. For example, in the summer, you want to cool your home. A Heat Pump will "pump" the heat from the inside of your home to the outside, making your home cooler. If you compare the efficiency of a Heat Pump to the efficiency of a furnace and an air conditioner, a Heat Pump can deliver up to 3 times the heat to your home than the energy that it consumers!

Aren't Heat Pumps Designed for Warmer Climates?

For example, if you were living in Florida, where the year round temperature is typically 50 degrees or higher, you would be able to get away with just the installation of a heat pump. But for all of us midwesterners, the best way to make your heat pump as energy efficient as possible is to pair it with the installation of a high efficiency furnace.
